MONEY 147 - HUMOR

THIS IS MY 147TH BLOG ON UNDERSTANDING MONEY TOOLS
November, 2018

Let’s start by saying that “humor creates laughter, laughter creates better health and this can carry over to business”.  Even Aristotle wrote about the importance of laughter.

Please, let’s all get a sense of humor.  Unfortunately and perceptively I, like most, see the great divide that has happened in the USA.  It is happening in religion, color of skin, politics, age...and much more.  Sad. We are taking “life” all too seriously!

In this blog we are going to look at humor and happiness.  Each of us chooses each minute, each day.  This relates to understanding of money and success.  I have been up and down in life several times; it happens to most of us. It frankly is hard to stay up.  It seems that millennials would rather stay stone-faced and not personally interconnect with humanity, they would rather grab their iPhones or computers.

Politically, corporately and socially we need to lighten up, gain a sense of humor and work as a united team.  With a sense of humor it is proven you will live longer, be healthier and lead a more enriched life.

Many of the successful companies, let’s say retailers like Target, get the point of humor and personal contact to be successful.  I believe each of us, underneath, knows how meaningful this is for success; however we do a poor job of practicing it.  As a for instance, Target stores get together, managers and employees, each morning to go over important issues.  This ends with a “rah, rah” as a football team would do. I’m not much into this but it accomplishes 1) direct communication of issues, 2) team work and 3) positive start for the day.  The same could be said for every football team in the USA.

Target realizes that similar products can be bought in many places.  People only come back for the pleasant, happy, fun experience with employees.  This holds true with most companies.

In our last blog we discussed the importance of mentors and coaches.  The same holds true here.  Your coach will, or should, keep you positive and on track.  Positive energies attract positive energies, negativity attracts negativity. Get rid of the negative nature in your life!

There are different kinds of humor; adjust.  You must learn to laugh “with people”, do not laugh “at people”.  Best reality you can gain is that “each of us is different”, none of us “is better than the other person”.  It is all perception.  As I have mentioned in previous blogs, “perceived value” is more important than “real value”.  However, when it comes to individual people, please accept them.  This country and the world need to unite.

As an example, I had a friend, Neal Groff, in Denver who was a very successful estate planner and insurance salesman for the wealthy around the country.  While discussing this topic of positive nature with him one day he said he always kept a smile on his face, although hard at times.  If he needed to make a very important phone call to a client he would put on a smile and be happy before the call.  Let the good energies flow through the phone!

Another friend from years past, Charlie Martin, a very successful commercial real estate broker would call me and other clients and start with a bunch of very funny, albeit dirty jokes.  He had them written down in a book, but over the phone you thought he could just remember a ton of them. What was he doing besides having fun with this?  He was getting his clients laughing, then they wanted more contact with him.  He would subtly get you into the let’s meet to discuss deals and a “yes” mode.  Before you knew it you were saying “yes” to deals and creating sales for him.

“You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar”.  We used to use humor in everyday life that resulted in fun and happiness whether it was with business or socially.  I see this lacking today.  Goof around a bit as long as it doesn’t hurt others.  Create more light heartedness and fun!  We should all have a good sense of humor.  This will make us more united and overlook the divides I spoke of earlier.
